We want to be ready for the adventure ahead

As our local high school graduates face the inevitable next step of moving away, it’s easy for the class of 2017 – and their parents – to question if our young adults are fully prepared to make informed decisions that protect them from potential harm, and promote their health in college towns and major cities across the country – and the world.

Sure, our graduates believe they’re ready, but are they fully aware of the risks they face if they make poor decisions about their safety, security, health and mental fitness?  We want to believe the answer is a resounding yes, but covering the essential basics before they leave our fair hamlet will increase the odds.

This is a FREE ½-day seminar  for up to 100 graduating seniors*, and 100 parents* of those seniors, to learn critical “must know” content on four topics:  safety and health; Dorm/Campus safety; Personal Security; Mental Health and Medical Health.  Presented at a local Ridgefield facility, content delivery would come from subject matter experts in (4) 45-minute sessions, with groups of attendees rotating through each of the four topic areas.

Q&A

Who can attend?

Any graduating high school  senior who resides in Ridgefield, CT from any area high school -- and a parent/guardian -- can attend.  Sorry, but space constraints limit attendance to one parent or guardian.
Who is running this, and why?

The simple answer is that adult and student volunteers from Ridgefield are working together with the Ridgefield Parks & Recreation Deparment, our sponsor, to create this unique experience for senior class members and a parent or guardian.  The speakers are volunteers and the space is donated by the Ridgefield Rec Center.  We're hopeful it will be a positive bonding experience that increases confidence and reduces any anxiety for both students and parents alike as our seniors leave Ridgefield in the summer/fall.

If you're looking for a specific organizer name, it's Mark Dollins, a Ridgefield resident and father of two soon-to-be graduating seniors. Angie Dollins (his princess bride) and Jeanine Pardey-Levine, join him as organizers.

How do I register?

See that big red box/button at the top right of this page? Click it. Cool things happen. Registration is first come, first served.  It's not a rock concert, but we hope to 'sell out.'

?

?

What does it cost?

Nothing, Nada, Rien. You get the picture.

?

?

Can I come alone?

The seminar is designed to provide students and parents/guardians with a shared learning experience, so sign ups need to be in pairs: a student with a parent or guardian. So, well, the answer is no.
What do I bring?

Comfortable shoes and clothes, an open mind, and a good attitude. This is going to be a fun experience. Just breathe it in.

What does the agenda look like?

A working draft of the agenda should give you a pretty good sense of flow for the day and topics we expect to cover, but  we're working to make this interactive, informative and fun. Dont worry -- we'll work in a couple of breaks, too.
What if I can't make it?
Will you do this again?

This is a pilot program, so we're hoping it goes well and we'll be back with future dates. We know that space is limited, as is the size of the crowd we can accomodate this first year.  So if we run out of space this year, we apologize in advance. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Haven't students already seen this kind of content?

Yes and no. There is a class offered at RHS (remember this is open to all Ridgefield seniors, regardless of where they attend) that covers some of these content areas. But not all seniors take that class. We've talked with the instructor and seen the curriculum for that class, and this seminar will pick up where that class leaves off.
